Abstract

Background. One of most important task of text linguistics is to research the principles which determine the choice of concrete verbal means for a certain interaction format. This explains the high interest of the text linguists to the study of the formal and semantic organization peculiarities of different text types – conventional patterns of language usage which have developed historically in a linguoculture to achieve a communicative purpose. This problem is considered in this paper by the example of the realization of the text category temporality in the text type reader’s letter. The objective of this research is to study the peculiarities of usage of different tense forms in readers’ letters and to determine the role of these tense forms in the macrostructure organization of this text type.
Materials and methods. Empirical corpus of the research was composed of 200 readers’ letters published in news magazines Der Spiegel (№ 27–30, 2009) and Focus (№ 17–23, 2009). These texts contain more than 1200 finite verb forms which are the constitutive unit of our analysis. To realize the research objective, we have used the quantitative method for the study of the frequency of different tense forms in readers’ letters and the method of functional analysis for the study of the role of different tense forms in the macrostructure organization of the text type reader’s letter.
Results. The findings from the research show the frequency of the use of different verbal tense forms in readers’ letters, explain the role of different tense forms in the organization of these texts and illustrate significant positive correlations between the use of certain tense forms or the actualization of their concrete functions and macrocomponents of the text type reader’s letter.
Conclusions. Analysis has shown that text type «reader’s letter» has a complex temporal structure in which almost all grammatical tenses of the German language are used. The choice of the tense forms or the actualization of a function of polyfunctional tense forms is sensitive to the text type macrostructure what manifests itself in the most frequent use of certain tense forms or in the actualization of their certain functions in concrete macrocomponents of reader’s letter.
